HANGRY

HANGRY
Adj slang used to describe someone who is moody because they are hungry.

Have you seen the snickers commercials? “You aren’t you when you’re hungry, grab a snicker’s?” Well it’s totally true! Maybe not that a snickers is going to make you feel more you, but you are a totally different person when you are hungry.
I wake up at 4:00 am every morning and began my routine. I love sleep, so I say 4:00 but I really mean 4:00ish. After I’ve pressed the snooze button five times, tell myself if you leave the house early enough you can grab Starbucks on the way in. (Starbucks is out of the way therefore I’d have to get up reallllly early for this to happen). It very rarely ever happens.  It takes an hour without traffic to get to work. Even though I’m on the road by 5:10 am every morning there is always traffic. Meaning no drive through breakfast for me. Sometimes if I’m being proactive I’ll grab a burrito from the freezer or a yogurt and eat it right when I get in at 6:00am. But if that doesn’t happen, who knows when my next meal will be.
I’ve officially been up for two hours and I haven’t had anything to eat or drink.
I’m the type of person that is constantly on the go, especially when I’m on the clock. I don’t stop, once I do stop or slow down I’m pretty much done for the day.
I love food! I work with it all day long. I think it’s funny that I work in restaurants and make other people fancy meals all the time, but I rarely ever eat, or sit down and enjoy a meal. If I’m super busy I normally ignore my hunger and just power through. Maybe having an iced coffee, or a few sips of water. Possibly stuff a few cookie crumbs or chips in my mouth before moving on to the next task.

It is now 3:00pm and the work day is over, or so it seems. I get in my car and drive back home. Rush hour is in effect at this time, and it takes me about an hour and a half to get home. Now, I have a three tier wedding cake to make, and I’m supposed to be going out with friends tonight. The cakes are already made, they just need to be filled, flat iced, and then frosted. There isn’t much decorative design, so I figure that I can get it done in a rather short period of time. Boy was a wrong.

The base cake was 14 inches, moderately large, but I’ve done larger. It’s filled and crumb coated and for the life of me I can’t get the smooth edges I’m looking for. At this point I am beyond frustrated. I’ve been working on this one layer for over an hour. Unacceptable doesn’t even begin to explain it. It should never ever take that long, EVER. That being said I cleaned up the kitchen, put all my tools away, and sat down for a minute. Basically the first time I’ve sat down all day. I realized I hadn’t eaten at all… I was hangry.

I made myself a quick dinner, relaxed for a bout thirty minutes, canceled my plans because there was no way I was going out, and then I got back to work.

I turned up the music on my speakers, and got to work. It took me ten minutes to frost that cake. Bae, back in action!

The rest of the cake assembling process went by quite smoothly ( pun not intended).

I cleaned up, went to bed, and then proceeded to work a fifteen hour shift the next day.

Moral of this story, is EAT… take time for yourself. You are always on the go, and you don’t even realize how subtly or how drastically not eating affects you.

Hello fellow bloggers. My name is Bailey, but you can call me Bae. I am a 22 year old college graduate, and an aspiring pastry chef. I have recently been released into the real, wild, culinary world, and I am slowly finding my way. In the midst of it all I plan on exploring restaurants, pursuing food photography, critiquing recipes as well as creating my own, as well as reading as many chef biographies as my free time allows. I think it is important to know about the chefs that have paved the way for us fellow culinarians. It also allows you to sound educated when conversing with others in the field. I am very excited to see where this adventure takes me; I hope you will come along for the ride!
